Celebrating its 30th birthday this year at London’s Business Design Centre, New Designers is a gathering of Britain’s brightest lights in the design world. The conference presents an opportunity for students from Britain’s leading design courses to exhibit their work and provide visitors with an opportunity to buy their products. The conference takes place in two parts: the first part occurs from the 24th to the 27th of June, and the second part from the 1st to the 4th July.
Sponsors and Supporters
There are over 3,000 designers showcasing their work at the exhibition, encompassing a wide range of disciplines and sectors. The event attracts a large number of sponsors and supporters, such is the importance it has to the design industry. Retail giant John Lewis is a proud supporter, along with Virgin Atlantic, Sky, and Absolut. The full list of supporters includes:
Mars Chocolate UK
The Goldsmiths Company
In the furniture section of the exhibition, a particularly stand-out project is ‘Language of Light’ by Thomas Perkins from the Bath School of Art & Design. Thomas says his work is “inspired by the shape and optical properties of prisms”, and he has used this inspiration to create lighting systems that use reflection and diffraction to create unique visual displays. As well as lighting, there are some fantastic innovations in the world of surface design and furniture design, from tables and chairs to lamps and storage. The importance of backing from the likes of John Lewis and Virgin Atlantic cannot be underestimated, as this gives the designers a huge boost and drive to continue their work. Winner of the John Lewis Award for Design Excellence and Innovation in 2014. Frances Stevenson, said “I’m so overwhelmed that a big company like John Lewis likes my work. I have been looking forward to coming to New Designers for ages and this was the icing on the cake.” As well as the showcases and the awards, visitors can also benefit from a variety of talks and tours from experts in the industry, offering their insight to particular sectors and what the future holds for the design industry. New Designers has been taking place for over 30 years, and the reason for this is clear: it provides a great platform for the most exciting young designers to showcase their work to members of the public, industry peers and giants alike.
